Road trip through Florida Keys to Key West
Road trip
Road trip from Miami to Key West. I’m speechless. This is an epic, must do, an iconic road trip to do, if you are in Florida. I’ve always wanted to see the Florida Keys, but have never even imagined that it looks so amazing. The 181 km long Highway 1 takes you through the Keys. And if you have time you should stop on every island. We just had one day, so we headed directly to Key West.
Florida Keys
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 24 km south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba.
Direct, no stopping, drive from Miami to Key West takes around 4 hours, luckily we had no traffic on the highway. I’ll definitely go again, but next time I’ll spend more time on other islands, this means I have to go for more than just one day 😀
Just driving through is amazing itself and you can stop whenever you see something you like. But if you want to see more, it’s best to do a little research before. You can find a lot of information on Visit Florida, Fla Keys and the Florida Keys sites. Or check out some guidebooks.
Key West
Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida on the North American continent, at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys. The island is about 6.4 km long and 1.6 km wide. Duval Street, its famous main street, is a mere 1.8 km in length in its 14-block crossing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Florida Straits/Atlantic Ocean.
Halloween in Key West
It was a week before Halloween when we were there, but there was already everything in Halloween spirit. Zombie masks were cycling around the Duval street. Crazy 😀
